At 2:46, on the afternoon of Friday 11 March 2011, a colossal earthquake struck deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, some 45 miles off the coast of northeast Japan. The tsunamis that inundated and devastated communities along a two-hundred mile stretch of coastline left over 20,000 people dead or missing. In the summer and the autumn of 2011, I documented the places and people that I encountered during two journeys that I made southwards down the Sanriku coast.
